Class Schedule September - October 2019

The classes are listed in the order that they should be taken, except that the Puppy Class is not needed prior to taking Beginners and the Heeling Class can be taken after Attention and Intermediate Two.

Rally Class Overview

AKC Rally© is a companion sport to AKC Obedience. It emphasizes teamwork between dog and handler along with performance skills similar to obedience as they complete a course of 10-20 stations designed by a rally judge. Each station has a sign that both visually and verbally describes the skill that is to be performed.

Because rally is intended to be fun and engaging for the dog and handler, the handler may talk to the dog throughout the course and give the dog multiple commands.

Our rally classes will introduce students to the rules and will provide practice opportunities forthe dogs and handlers.

Canine Good Citizen

Often referred to as CGC, this was created by AKC as a temperament test. Our class is aimed at preparing Dog and handler teams for the test. Teams who pass the test are deemed "a Good Citizen". Essentially this means the dog obeys the handler, basic commands, and he has a civil temperament.

Teams who pass the test may apply for certification. AKC has elevated the CGC to the level of Title. (AKC charges for registration of certificate and/or title.)

1 - Puppy

This class is for puppies 3 months or 12 weeks through 6 months with all Parvo, distemper vaccinations completed.

New: Walking on a leash, Release command, Sit, Come, Leave it, Stay, Down, Wait at doorway, Down Stay, Greeting people, Spot, Stand, High Five

Discussion: Crate training, Toys, Housebreaking, Excessive barking, Jumping on people, Brushing teeth and demo, Nail care and demo, Poison control

2 - Beginner

This class is for all dogs 6 months old or older.

New: Controlled walking on leash, Sit from stand, Release word, Come, Down from Sit, Sit Stay, Down Stay, Wait at Doorway, Stand Stay, Focus, "Get back", Sit quietly as stranger approaches

3 - Attention

New: Attention, Beginning Heeling with Attention

Attention is one of the most important aspects of training. It's essence is forming a stronger bond with your dog so that you always have your dog's attention.

We begin by using food and toys, praise and correction. The ultimate goal is transferring the attention from the food or toy to the handler.

4 - Advanced Beginner

New: Fronts, Stand on verbal command, Heeling, Down signal, Sit Signal, Sit from Down, Stand Signal

5 & 6 - Intermediate One and Beginner Retrieve

New: Verbal Sit from Down, Sit and Stand for exam, Directed Jumping, Speedier Recalls, Heeling (Halts, Faster Starts, Fasts, Slows, Figure 8, Turns), Recall Signal, Beginning dumbbell retrieve, Broad jump, Go outs

Continue Working on: Stays, Recall, Heeling, Sits, Fronts, Signals

This is a 1.5 to 2 hour class, time will vary. For the competitive handler this class provides a good foundation for showing in Open and Utility. For the non-competitive hander this class will create a closer heel (walking beside you) for use in public areas, to retrieve different items, to go over a vertical and horizontal jump with good form, and be sent to a certain area (Go Out).

7 & 8 - Intermediate Two and Intermediate Retrieve

New: Finish, Distractions on various exercises, Heeling Turns, Drop on Recall, Heeling signal, Faster Sits on Halts, Directed Glove Retrieve

Continue Working on: In sight stays, Fronts, Heeling, Directed jumping, Recalls, Signals, Dumbbell retrieve, go outs, broad jump

9 & 10 - Advanced One and Advanced Retrieve

New: Out of sight stays, Pivots, Moving Stand, Scent Articles

Continue Working on: Finish, Heeling, Drop on Recalls, Signals, Halts, Distractions on various exercises, Dumbbell retrieve, Go outs, Gloves

11 - Advanced Retrieving and Go Outs

New: Articles, Retrieve over high jump

Continue Working on: Dumbbell retrieve, Go outs, Gloves

12 - Advanced 2

New: Off Lead Heeling

Continue Working on: Heeling, Pivot, Recall, Signals, Broad jump, Go Outs, Gloves, Articles, Moving Stand, Retrieve over High Jump, Drop on Recall.

13 - Heeling, Advanced Attention

Can be taken after Attention and Intermediate Two. Improve attention while heeling and work on finer details of heeling.
